SKANAG General Meeting Recap: A Renewed Commitment to Community, Culture, and Connection
The St. Kitts and Nevis Association of Georgia, Inc. (SKANAG) held its 1st General Meeting for 2026 on February 23, 2025, bringing members together for an important conversation about the future direction of the organization. The tone of the meeting was focused, forward-looking, and community-centered, with a clear emphasis on revitalizing SKANAG through stronger participation, transparent leadership, and renewed cultural pride.
At the heart of the discussion was one major message: SKANAG is entering a season of rebuilding, reconnecting, and re-engaging its members. The interim leadership team shared the Association’s goals, which include strengthening connections among nationals and friends of St. Kitts and Nevis, increasing membership, and creating more opportunities for members to contribute ideas and serve in meaningful ways.
A key highlight from the meeting was the announcement and discussion of SKANAG’s newly acquired 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. This is an important milestone because it positions the organization to receive tax-deductible donations, pursue grant opportunities, and build a stronger financial foundation for future programs and community initiatives. Along with this came a clear call for financial accountability, transparency, and active member involvement.
The meeting also introduced several committees designed to help move SKANAG’s mission forward. These included Cultural Affairs, Education and Scholarships, Youth Services, Community Outreach, and Economic Growth. Members were encouraged to participate in these committees, not just as volunteers, but as active contributors to the future of the organization.
Key Takeaways from the Meeting
One of the strongest takeaways was the need for organized participation. Members were encouraged to invite others to join, share ideas, and take part in shaping the Association’s next chapter. The upcoming election process was also discussed, with leadership roles including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer expected to be part of the formal structure.
Another major point was the importance of professional structure and governance. Members raised thoughtful feedback around the need for bylaws review, membership dues, and clear election procedures. These points showed that members are not only interested in participating, but also in making sure the organization is built on a strong and sustainable foundation.
Fundraising was another important topic. While the annual gala has traditionally been a major fundraising opportunity, members were encouraged to think beyond one event. Ideas such as in-kind donations, expanded fundraising strategies, and year-round giving opportunities were welcomed.
Education and youth support also stood out as a priority. The scholarship conversation reflected a shared desire to support students connected to St. Kitts and Nevis, both locally and throughout the diaspora. The discussion around SKN Scholars reinforced the importance of building programs that create real educational impact.
Members’ Feedback and Community Voice
The feedback from members was thoughtful, practical, and rooted in a desire to see SKANAG succeed. Members asked important questions about membership structure, dues, bylaws, fundraising, community engagement, and how people outside of Georgia can participate.
One important clarification was that participation in SKANAG is open regardless of geographic location. This opens the door for a broader diaspora community to stay connected, contribute, and support the Association’s mission.
Members also expressed interest in receiving meeting notes and organizational updates, which supports the broader goal of transparency and communication.
Important Notes from the President and Leadership
The message from leadership was clear: SKANAG’s success will depend on unity, participation, and shared responsibility. The interim team emphasized that revitalizing the Association is not just about leadership positions. It is about building a movement where members feel seen, heard, and connected to the mission.
The President’s remarks and the broader leadership discussion pointed to several priorities moving forward:
SKANAG will continue working to strengthen its membership base, finalize bylaws, establish a member database, communicate election details, and provide follow-up information to attendees. The leadership team also emphasized the importance of members stepping forward to serve, share ideas, and help build committees that reflect the needs of the community.
The meeting closed on a positive note with recognition of the success of the 2024 Toy Drive and plans for a 2025 Toy and Book Drive. This served as a reminder that SKANAG’s work is not only about meetings and structure, but also about service, generosity, and cultural connection.
Looking Ahead
The February 23 meeting reflected a meaningful step toward a stronger, more organized, and more engaged SKANAG. The tone was hopeful, collaborative, and action-oriented. Members were not simply asked to attend. They were invited to help shape the future.
As SKANAG moves forward, the focus will be on building trust, expanding participation, strengthening governance, and creating programs that serve the community with purpose. This meeting made one thing clear: SKANAG’s next chapter will be built together.
